CreateSpace, the popular platform for independent authors, recently announced that its Expanded Distribution is now being offered free of charge. This is big news for independent authors everywhere. Previously, the charge for Expanded Distribution was too much for independent authors to afford, limiting them to marketing their books only on Amazon – but those days are gone!
What Does Expanded Distribution Mean?
Generally, CreateSpace is for distribution through Amazon.com as well as their European sites. With Expanded Distribution, authors have the ability to market their books through a variety of channels including retailers, independent bookstores, distributors and even libraries.
How is it Different?
In general, books by independent authors would not be able to be found without a relationship with large distributors which is very difficult to do as a new author without a publisher. Without proper listings with the largest distributors, many large retailers, independent bookstores or libraries would be unable to access independent authors’ books. The relationship needs to be made, which up until recently came at a hefty charge – but not any longer.
Who Will See the Books?
Once enrolled in Expanded Distribution, independent authors could see their books in a variety of other bookstores and channels as soon as six weeks. The premise of the entire concept is the same – there is a constant stock of the books at CreateSpace, but the ordering works on demand through online channels; this would of course be different if you opted for offline book sales in larger retail stores, such as Barnes & Noble.
The entire book industry is about to change with this improvement in publishing. Independent authors will now be able to be discovered whether through the retail sector or the library system. Getting these books in the hands of more kids and adults will not only further the career of indie authors but also benefit consumers by giving them a wide variety of books to choose from that were previously unavailable to them.
